Many people think that nipple preference happens when a baby discovers that it's easier to get milk from a bottle than a breast, or when a baby takes a bottle and then "forgets" how to nurse. But babies breastfeed instinctively, and it's their preference from the get-go. In most instances, a baby won't prefer a bottle to the breast unless he's having trouble getting enough milk from the breast.
Other signs that your baby is not getting enough milk from your breasts include a nursing strike (when a baby refuses to nurse), sore nipples, breast engorgement, or a slowdown in your baby's weight gain.Avoid bottles and pacifiers until breastfeeding is well established, especially if your baby is having trouble learning to latch on or suck correctly, or you're concerned about your milk supply. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not giving your nursing baby a pacifier before he's 4 weeks old.
